The Ottawa County Sheriff says 47-year-old Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife, 39-year-old Amanda, as well as their six kids.

He then reportedly arranged their bodies in their beds, set fire to strategic points of the house, and turned his gun on himself.

Family spokesperson and Mandy Karolkiewicz's cousin, Emily Jones, said Mandy's parents and the rest of the family are still working to process the deaths.

'We're all just still in a state of shock,' she told News 8. 'It's hard to wrap our heads around it. It's just stunning. We're taking it one day at a time, one minute at a time. One minute you're laughing at a memory or a photo you found and the next minute you just break down in tears. It's hard.'

Amanda worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools. Kristopher worked for the National American Heart Association.

His position "ended" with the company just weeks before the apparent murder-suicide.

On Reddit, the account attributed to Amanda (MandyK1179) said she grew up in Metro Detroit and that living along the Lake Michigan shoreline on the west side of the state was "like living in a Hallmark movie."

When she met him, she had been the intern at this company. The two went on to marry, have four kids of their own, and adopt two girls from China.

But the account also claimed that her husband had had an affair with an intern several years ago, and that the marriage had been essentially over since that point. She posted about living for herself and keeping up appearances for the sake of their kids.

Speculation always follows these kinds of stories.

None of us know what happened in the final hours of the family's lives. We can report on infidelities, insecurities, backbiting, lack of love and respect, and lost dreams and careers.

But we can't see into their hearts.

Six children and their two parents are dead. One can assume, given the data, that the path to this horrific point started many years ago.
