Here's CBS News on the punishing tariffs from Trump:
The Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 12.5% Friday on goods from 60 U.S. trading partners it accused of failing to crack down on forced labor. The move, announced Thursday, extended the administration's tariffs on much of the world.
Most of the trading partners are facing 12.5% tariffs, including Vietnam and China, but a lower 10% rate applies to 17 countries that have some prohibitions on forced labor, including the United Kingdom, Canada and Mexico. Five other trading partners β including the European Union β are facing some additional levy to get their total most-favored-nation tariff rate to either 10% or 12.5%.
This is being touted as a crackdown on countries where forced labor is either 1) openly practiced or 2) ignored by authorities.
There are more slaves worldwide than any other time in history. International Justice Mission notes there are 50 million slaves. Trafficking these slaves is itself a $200-billion industry annually, to say nothing of the economic value that the actual labor brings to the slavers.
The majority of imported goods involve forced labor at some point in the supply chain.
These tariffs would therefore apply to 99% of U.S. imports, according to Fox News:

These new tariffs aren't exactly replacements for the ones that expired at midnight on Thursday, but they do continue the Trump admin's strategy of returning manufacturing to America by raising prices on imported goods.
Many critics of this policy exist on both sides of the political aisle.
Knowing this, it seems the Trump admin is using forced labor as the focus so a judge can't easily rule against the policy.

The tariffs will still probably be shot down by a judge.
But if they are, the Trump admin will ask why that judge approves of slavery.
