The drowning boy was clinging desperately to his surfboard, but kept disappearing beneath the waves. According to State Parks Operations Superintendent Scott Sipes, the child had been only a few feet from the shore, but had been hit by a massive wave that had pulled him 50 feet out to sea in the undertow current.
The lifeguard, a 16-year-old boy, swam out into the 8-foot swell and powerful current being stirred up by Hurricane Genevieve to the south.
