People magazine reports on an extremely Florida rescue story:

A recent dog rescue in Florida left some firefighters perplexed. ...

Firefighters [with the Cape Coral Fire Department] said two of their units responded to a call about a dog stuck in a canal. When firefighters arrived and attempted to rescue the animal, the creature "swam from shore to shore."

As People reports, "the animal eventually crawled under a dock," from which the firefighters were able to rescue it, as depicted below:

And, yes, the copy refers to the "dog" as a "creature" and "the animal."

Because as it turns out, it wasn't a dog:

Firefighters entered the water and were able to extract what turned out to be a coyote pup from the space.

Yes, the firefighters went into the water expecting a Husky mix and came out with a stinkin' coyote:

You gotta love how absolutely tripped out this beast looks:

As the fire department said, the yote "was exhausted from its ventures and unable to be released." Officials said the beast would be cared for and then taken to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic.

As People reports, a nearby neighbor "originally saw the coyote fall in the lake" and "jumped in after to try to get it" before the firefighters got there.

Pro tip: Make sure it ain't a coyote before you dive in after it!
