Hari Budha Magar served in the first battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles (1RGR) in the British Army in Afghanistan, where he lost both his legs to an IED.
While that event ended his military career, it also launched his world-record-setting career.
Hari currently holds five world record mountain-climbing titles, including his most recent one: he is the world's first double-leg amputee to climb the Seven Summits.
The Seven Summits are the seven tallest mountains on each continent: Mount Everest (Asia), Mont Blanc (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa), McKinley (North America), Aconcagua (South America), Puncak Jaya (Australia), and Vinson (Antarctica).
He has been officially named as part of the Guinness World Record ICONS program.
So, why pick up mountain climbing with no legs?
I wanted to change perceptions around disability, not just how we perceive ourselves but how others perceive us. When I became disabled, I wasted nearly two years of my time not knowing what I can do.
I thought my life had ended. I would be looked down on. I perceived myself as a burden on this planet because I thought I couldn't do anything and my life was not worth living.
While he wants people with disabilities to be empowered, he isn't recommending everyone missing limbs go climb mountains.
If you adapt your life according to time, situation and your ability, you can make anything possible. That's what I did.
I say βlife is all about adaptation - Nothing is impossible.' But respect the nature and adapt accordingly, nature is way more powerful than humans. If you don't respect, it will kill you. Nature doesn't care how strong, powerful, rich, famous you are, it will kill you.
Literally words to live by.
