Yep. We're afraid to give grades now.
Here's a closer look from the school's website at how they'll be protecting the fragile little snowflakes from learning whether or not they're succeeding or failing:
Ah, yes, the all-important "mental health."
From The Hill:
Eighteen percent of college students reported severe depression symptoms in the 2024-25 Healthy Minds Study — which is administered by the Healthy Minds Network at Michigan's flagship university — marking the third straight year of decline.
Justin Heinze, an associate professor at the university's School of Public Health, noted the reductions are 'not a blip.'
Heinze said, 'Whether it's distance from the pandemic, better institutional support, or something else driving the change, I think this is a promising counternarrative to what seems like constant headlines around young people's struggles with mental health.'
As for the confident, non-snowflake students who don't need to be coddled? They'll have no choice but to participate in the program.
So will the incoming students at Michigan develop the skills that are necessary for them to succeed in the world of higher education, thereby preparing them for real life as an adult in the world?
Who knows? Telling them might hurt their feelings.
Michigan isn't the first major institution to pull this garbage, either.
MIT has been doing it for over half a century, believe it or not.
Michigan is not alone in eliminating letter grades for first-semester students. Since 1968, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has assigned pass or no credit grades during first-year fall and letter grades in the spring.
Very reassuring to know that the first-year students at one of the most prestigious science and technology schools are just being ushered through without knowing if they're failing or not.
But if recent history is any guide, this won't be doing Michigan students any favors:
