Because Republicans don't seem to care about saving the Republic, Trump is forcing their hand.
For months, Senate Republicans delayed voting on the SAVE Act, a nationwide voter ID requirement for federal elections. Over 80% of the country is in favor of this, including an overwhelming majority of Democrat voters.
Without nuking the filibuster, the bill requires 60 votes to pass, but Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) hasn't been willing to do that. Just look at his body language on Tuesday:
Other senators like Mitch McConnell have hemmed and hawed at the SAVE Act, leaving it dead in the water while Democrats prepare to win the midterms, flood the nation with more illegals, and never lose an election ever again.
People are debating if Trump's strategy will work. Making the SAVE Act part of the budget means that Republicans don't have to find 60 votes. They just need 50 senators plus Vice President Vance.
Some argue this violates the Byrd rule, which says any non-budget items have to get 60% of the vote. Whether or not an item violates the Byrd rule is decided by the unelected Senate parliamentarian, who determines if proper procedure is being followed.
But the parliamentarian serves at the pleasure of the majority leader (Thune).
Maine's Susan Collins recently signaled that she has switched her vote on the SAVE Act, giving the GOP 50 votes, plus Vance's tiebreaker.
If Thune or other Republicans work to undermine Trump's plan when they DO actually have the votes, the optics for them will be horrible.
Trump will have caught them actively impeding him on a voter ID law that is supported by 95% of Republicans and 80% of the wider country. If GOP leaders don't get this done, Trump will have proven that they are, well, traitors to their own voters.
