The alt-right is gaining control of South America and I LOVE IT.

Javier Milei in Argentina, Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, Abelardo de la Espriella in a runoff in Colombia, and now Keiko Fujimori in Peru.

This was a very, very close election and Fujimori had to beat the 50% mark to win this runoff. But the projections show that she is now safely in the lead.

(Although, like California, the votes are still being counted.)

Fujimori is the daughter of Alberto Fujimori, who served as president for ten years. He focused on clearing out leftist guerrilla fighters in the country with a Bukele-style crackdown, but was also accused of being authoritarian and violating human rights.

26 years after Alberto left office and was forced to flee to Japan, and two years after his death, his daughter appears to be ascending to the presidency.

Here's the latest from Reuters:

Peru's conservative presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori kept a slight lead on Monday over ‌her leftist rival in a runoff election, with over 90% of the votes counted, an official tally showed.

Fujimori, the daughter of hardline former President Alberto Fujimori, secured 50.48% of the votes, while leftist congressman Roberto Sanchez, who has strong support in rural areas, trailed her by less than 200,000 votes with the remaining 49.52% ...

Peru's presidential race remains too close to call and continued to tighten as the count entered its second day.

The result echoes the 2021 runoff, when Fujimori and Pedro Castillo finished roughly 50.1% to 49.9% and the proclamation dragged on for weeks amid nullity challenges.

This is Fujimori's fourth attempt to run for president of Peru.

She has finished at over 49%, but under 50%, in the previous two cycles.

I guess we'll see if the 4th time is the charm?
