Venezuela looks like it was hit by an atomic bomb.
No one knows exactly how many people are missing, or how many of those people are buried under rubble.
Independent sites like Desaparecidos Terremoto Venezuela have estimated nearly 70,000, but this likely includes many duplicates.
The United Nations, meanwhile, has reported estimates between 50,000 and 51,000 people.
Either way, the numbers are horrific.
We have now exceeded the 3-day golden window for rescuing those who are trapped. Without water, death is imminent for anyone who is stuck under collapsed buildings.
Still, stories of rescues are still rolling in.
Teams from all over the world arrived in Venezuela within hours to a day, and they have been working non-stop. Numerous U.S. teams are on the ground, including a contingent of Marines aboard Osprey aircraft:
One of the hardest but noblest stories is that of Andrea Bello, the wife of soccer player Héctor Bello.
She was found dead, but in her last act on this earth, she shielded their one-year-old daughter from the rubble. Her ultimate sacrifice allowed the little girl to live.
Another notable story is that of Dr. María Fernanda Terán, who delivered a baby boy when his mother went into labor on the streets of La Guairá following the quakes.
'Amidst the darkness, there is light,' one person commented. 'Here is living proof; that treasure arrived to be a light.'
'Because in the midst of misfortune, miracles still exist,' another onlooker said.
'That infant is a blessing and it is a blessing going through that storm,' another follower said. 'So beautiful.'
"Amidst the darkness, there is light."
I couldn't have said it better myself.
