Life in blue states is just an episode of SNL now.

Watch:

The man in the passenger seat of that Dodge Challenger is Brian DePeña, the mayor of the town of Lawrence, Massachusetts. His lawyer was driving.

My favorite part? When the lawyer pulled the race card. Classic!

In 2021, DePeña defeated the incumbent, Kendrys Vasquez, in a race involving 11,694 votes.

On Friday, he was arrested on federal charges of wire fraud involving $1.5 million in Covid relief funds that were allegedly used to pay for his own personal expenses:

DePeña showed up to the courthouse, where his lawyer explained to reporters that he can't answer questions about the charges because he doesn't speak English.

For real!

The mayor (again, for a Massachusetts town) has repeatedly said he does not speak English.

In December 2025, he was summoned to court to discuss his ally, former police chief William Castro, who was stripped of his badge after threatening a subordinate who reported him for chasing a suspect into traffic and lying about the incident.

While in court, DePeña requested a translator, citing his lack of English proficiency.

DePeña has lived in the United States since the 1980s.

(Anyway, that's your update on the ongoing and impending doom of America.)
