That's right. Denver banned residents from owning popular modern rifles in the 1980s, and now a whole lot of taxpayer money is going to be wasted on both sides in order to uphold our God-given right to defend ourselves from criminals and tyrants (I repeat myself).

Denver's ban on aSsAuLt wEaPoNs passed in 1989. The law is cleverly worded and includes:

"All semiautomatic action, centerfire rifles with a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one (21) or more rounds."

This means any semiautomatic rifle (technology more than a century old) that can potentially hold a magazine with more than 21 rounds (Colorado has a separate ban limiting magazines to 15 rounds) is banned.

The standard mag size for AR/AK variant rifles are 30 rounds (I have a bunch of them!).

Recently, numerous SCOTUS cases (Heller and Bruen included) have ruled in favor of Americans' right to own weapons in common use, including the ArmaLite Rifle platform developed in the 1950s. The Trump admin is wasting no time to make sure Denver follows the law.

From Denver 7 on Monday:

The DOJ warned of a possible lawsuit if Denver does not repeal the ban, which restricts guns with magazines over 15 rounds, including AR-15-style firearms — a gun that the DOJ letter claims is the "most popular rifle in America."

"The Ordinance bans many weapons, including AR-15 style semiautomatic rifles. Law-abiding Americans own and use for lawful purposes literally tens of millions of AR-15 style rifles. Indeed, it is the most popular rifle in America. The City has banned an arm in common use for lawful purposes by law-abiding citizens. Therefore, the Ordinance violates the Second Amendment," the DOJ letter reads.

It's true!

It most definitely violates the Second Amendment, according to the Founders and the Supreme Court!

The DOJ decided 24 hours of warning was enough, and filed suit on Wednesday. From its release:

"The Constitution is not a suggestion and the Second Amendment is not a second-class right," said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. "Denver's ban on commonly owned semi-automatic rifles directly violates the right to bear arms. This Department of Justice will vigorously defend the liberties of law-abiding citizens nationwide."

Denver is vowing to fight the case, saying it is committed to protecting residents.

Here's the problem: Nationwide, rifles make up 3% of gun deaths. Handguns make up the vast majority (including the 55-60% of all gun deaths that are suicides).

The criminals who use these handguns often obtain them illegally and modify them illegally because criminals don't care about gun laws.

Denver, like most liberal cities, doesn't want to address fatherlessness, welfare, godlessness, and mass migration, which are the reasons for almost all gun violence.

They'd rather hide behind laws that make politicians feel safe while putting law-abiding Americans at a disadvantage against criminals.
