Big news on the Southern Baptist frontlines as the Convention just tried again, for the 5th time, to pass a ban on female pastors.

The Truth and Unity Amendment to the Convention's constitution was proposed by Dr. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. It passed with nearly three-fourths of the vote, surpassing the two-thirds necessary by a wide margin.

According to SBC rules, an amendment has to pass by two-thirds for two years in a row in order to take effect. This means next year's convention in Indianapolis will ultimately decide whether or not this line in the sand stands.

This isn't the first time a similar ban has passed.

In 2022, the Law Amendment proposed by Mike Law was referred to the Executive Committee and never went anywhere. In 2023 in New Orleans, the amendment passed the threshold, but failed the following year, only garnering around 60% of the vote.

In 2024 and 2025, the same amendment failed, again with around 60% of the vote.

This new amendment, with slightly altered (and according to some, clearer language), passed with ease.

Here is Dr. Mohler speaking about the amendment on Wednesday:

The structure of the language I have brought goes all the way back to the 1689 Baptist Confession, where the office and the function of pastor are clearly delineated.

This amendment makes very clear that a church in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention doesn't have anyone other than a man as pastor - in the office of pastor - and specifies on the functions of pastor that the key, central function of preaching the Word of God to the gathered assembly is limited to men by Scripture.

... I think we want to say truths consistent with what Baptists have believed going back to the 17th century, but it's because we believe those Baptists got it right according to Scripture. This is one of those moments when the Southern Baptist Convention can get it right...

Will Southern Baptists hold true to the Word of God and hold off the feminists?
