A black bear has been spotted roaming a city in Japan, and you'd think by the reaction that it was Godzilla or something.
In Tennessee, we call this a "Tuesday," but in Utsunomiya, it's the end of the world.
From The Guardian:
A city in Japan has closed all its 94 primary and secondary schools after a bear was spotted in the municipality for the first time.
Officials in Utsunomiya, a city of half a million people about 100km (62 miles) north of Tokyo, took action after a medium-sized black bear - estimated to be about one-metre-long - was seen near a park in the city on Saturday. The bear was spotted again on CCTV running just in front of two startled young men in the city centre, in the early hours of Sunday.
It was seen in residential areas during the day on Sunday, and again in a factory district about 2km from the city centre at 4am on Monday.
They shut down 94 schools, forcing all of the kids to stay at home because ONE bear was spotted in two different places in the city.
They're canceling school like an Alabama principal seeing snow in the forecast.
Still, bear attacks have gotten wildly out of control in Japan since citizens aren't allowed to carry blasters.
The Guardian notes 50,000 bear sightings this year. In 2025, 238 people were attacked and 13 died. Most of those were in remote areas, so a bear this close to Tokyo has the Japanese freaking out.
But, come on, it's one bear!
Utsunomiya City officials are urging residents to keep their doors and windows locked, not to approach the bear if they see it, and to take refuge in the closest building. The city has also deployed public address vehicles to alert local residents. Police and the local hunting association resumed their search for the animal this morning.
They have the nuclear fallout "stay in your homes" vehicles driving through the city to warn about ONE bear!
I love Japan, so tell them to invite Americans for a special hunting season and we'll take care of the problem in a week or two.
Those West Virginia boys don't even need guns to run the bears off 👇
