Okay, I'll let the commies steal soap if they promise to take a bath. π
For the past two hundred years, the West has been in a civil war with two competing ideologies about human nature and sin.
It's fun to laugh at this woman...
...but don't skip the significance.
One view in this philosophical civil war is summed up in "all men created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights." This view argues that man has divine rights, but is also in rebellion against God to the point where "every inclination of the human mind" is "nothing but evil all the time" (Genesis 6:5). Because we are in desperate need of a savior from our sins, government is a necessary evil to punish the criminal (Romans 13:4). "If men were angels," John Adams stated, "no government would be necessary." He further called government "the greatest of all reflections on human nature."
But because the government is itself comprised of sinful, selfish people, the ruling authorities will amass power and become the biggest criminals, so it is therefore "necessary to control the abuses of government" (Federalist 51).
The other side of this intellectual civil war says that mankind's true nature has been stifled by stuffy traditions and outdated moral norms. Embraced by many a secular revolutionary stretching back centuries - but perhaps best embodied by the writings of bath-hater Karl Marx - this view sees man's true glory being held back by all those checks and balances. Crime, selfishness, and the sins of the heart are not due to our rebellion against the righteous standards of a holy Creator, but the oppressive systems that have forced us to have certain desires and actions.
This is why Emily Gallagher is literally arguing for jails to be abolished:
The true crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city.
If we could merely free ourselves from the shackles of capitalism, the #Patriarchy, colonialism, racism, Christofascism, fatphobia, and whiteness, we could unlock the true potential of the human race. We would be supermen living in a progressive utopia where all skin colors, creeds, and infinite genders live without want. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" would allow everyone to live in a beautiful little farm house with the polyamorous partners of xe/xer's choice. All nations would be of a similar diverse polyglot fabric, with the ardent Hindu living next to the nonbinary lesbians of color on one side and the devout Muslim jihadi on the other.
The problem (for them) is that we've put these checks and balances on government, and the government is in charge of putting checks and balances on human nature.
Their "progressive" ideology must therefore remove the checks on government power in order to wield the authority of the State to make sure all of you are following their rules (for the common good, of course).
Not arresting criminals for stealing soap is just the logical extension of that illogical framework.
As for how the "let people steal what they need" theory plays out in real life...
