There's desperation, and then there's this:

Unreal.

Karmelo Anthony is charged with murdering fellow high school student Austin Metcalf in 2025 at a track meet in Texas.

To understand just how absurd the claim is that Austin Metcalf stumbled into Anthony's knife, let's review the testimonies heard in court over the past week:

  • On the morning of April 2, 2025, at Frisco's Kuykendall Stadium track meet, there was a rain delay that forced teams to wait in their tents.

  • Karmelo Anthony (then 17) entered his rival school's tent (Memorial High). He brought a backpack with a knife. Sitting in the opposing team's tent was highly unusual (now it has been banned).

  • Students and others (including Metcalf's twin brother Hunter) repeatedly asked Anthony to leave the tent and sit with his own team. Anthony refused, reportedly saying things like "I'm not leaving, f*** you all" and keeping his hand in his backpack.

  • Anthony reportedly warned others with phrases like "Touch me and find out."

  • Surveillance video shows Austin Metcalf approach Anthony and make contact. Witnesses say he gave a light touch/push to encourage Anthony to leave. A brief scuffle followed.

  • Anthony pulled a black folding knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest as a "surprise attack," according to prosecutors. The blade pierced the sternum and right ventricle of the heart, sinking over two inches into Metcalf's chest.

  • Jurors gasped at photos and videos of the scene, as well as an autopsy picture that showed Metcalf's sliced-up heart.

  • Anthony ran away but was chased down by students. Metcalf grabbed his chest, said "I've been stabbed," and ran down the bleachers for help before he collapsed. His brother Hunter was among coaches and emergency staff who tried in vain to help him.

THAT is the sequence of events.

Yet the best Anthony's lawyer could argue was that Metcalf IMPALED HIMSELF.

From the Daily Mail:

Since the state rested its case on Saturday, six defense witnesses have been called to the stand including Anthony's coach, a policeman, and four students who were at Kuykendall Stadium at the time of the incident.

The defense suffered a huge setback earlier today after one of the teen's teammates appeared to backtrack on claims that Anthony had been surrounded by a group of students when he fatally stabbed Metcalf.

Last week, defense lawyers suggested Metcalf may have impaled himself on Anthony's knife.

Reactions:

Understand this: Anthony's family raised over $600,000 toward his defense, surpassing donations for Austin Metcalf's family.

Both the defense and prosecution have rested, meaning the jury will be sequestered for deliberations on Tuesday. There was an odd 2-hour delay in proceedings on Monday afternoon, leading some to speculate that Anthony's lawyer had tried to reach a last minute plea deal and was unsuccessful.

When the jury reaches a verdict, we'll let you know.
