PlayStation just jumped on board with the World Economic Forum's promise that we'll all "own nothing and be happy" by ending the sale of physical copies of games.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
You read that correctly. According to parent company Sony, customers prefer spending $80-$100 for a digital license for a game (which can be revoked or lose support at any time).
To really emphasize the point, just last week Sony let PlayStation owners know that 551 movies they thought they had purchased on the platform were disappearing because of content licensing rights.
