When you love soccer and it's the World Cup, I guess you don't notice that you're a missing person.
Especially if you'd lost your phone like this bloke did.
That's Michael "Little Mick" Hewitt, a 65-year-old diehard Leeds United and England fan, and he had tickets to the World Cup in America. Unfortunately, he lost his phone when he got to Barcelona for a layover, so he then had no way of getting to America, because his tickets were all on his phone.
After he lost his phone, he was devastated.
Also devastated was his family, who couldn't get a hold of him and eventually put out social media posts and contacted the government to help find him.
More from that post:
On Saturday 20th June, Mick left Leeds, heading to Boston, USA for one of England's World Cup group games, travelling via Barcelona. He doesn't seem to have made it to Boston, and our last contact with him was from Barcelona in the early hours of Sunday morning, 21st June. Since then, his phone has been out of service and he hasn't posted any updates on social media. As you can imagine, we are now very worried for his safety.
So an investigation was launched.
From NYP:
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Interpol launched an investigation into Hewitt's disappearance, as relatives urged locals to spread posts about him.
The family wasn't sure whether or not "Little Mick" had even made it to Boston since nobody had seen him at the match.
And they were right.
After 10 days, the British Embassy in Spain tracked down the soccer fan's hotel through his card payments and put him in touch with his family the next day.
Ten days later!
They found him safe and sound in a Barcelona bar, blissfully sipping away, possibly watching soccer, and having zero clue that his relatives were one step away from printing missing posters with his face on milk cartons.
They were looking for him for ten days and they found him at a Barcelona pub watching soccer.
In related news, sources confirm Mick has already been offered sponsorship deals from several pubs and at least one confused travel insurance company.
You gotta love Europeans and their "football"!
