The show was first announced with a series order in November 2025. It hailed from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero, who was a writer on 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate: Atlantis' early in his career.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero's take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise's already dedicated fanbase.
Still seeking that elusive mOdErn aUdiEnce!
Instead, Amazon is thinking of handing the series to "someone who does not have history with it and would give it a fresh new perspective."

Let's take a brief trip down memory lane:
Star Wars is dead because they gave it to someone with "a fresh new perspective."
Rings of Power is dead is because they gave it to someone with "a fresh new perspective."
Star Trek is dead is because they gave it to someone with "a fresh new perspective."
Wheel of Time is dead is because they gave it to someone with "a fresh new perspective."
Halo is dead is because they gave it to someone with "a fresh new perspective."
I could go on.
More from Joseph Mallozzi, a writer and producer on Stargate SG:1 and Stargate: Atlantis:

Mallozzi pushed back against the allegation that Gero's team was not working on making the show accessible to a wider audience, which only opens up more questions.
Was Amazon upset that the show wasn't about lesbian space witches, or didn't feature gay Klingons named Jay-Den?

Was amazon hoping for a genderqueer version of Teal'c, as seen in a Pride Month speech by Boston's mayor this week?

Let's check in with Deadline for more clues:
The decision to pull the plug came late in the process — I hear the show had completed a 20-week writers room and was in pre-production in the UK. It was explained with the new series' vision and creative direction, which allegedly no longer aligned with Amazon's programming strategy.
The differences apparently ran so deep, they required an outright axing vs. retooling the existing version of the project by giving notes to Gero, a veteran showrunner who had been signed into an overall deal by Amazon MGM Studios for the purpose of him spearheading Stargate.
Gero helped write and produce the successful, iconic Stargate series that built the franchise. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the men behind the 1994 movie, were executive producers. Two legendary Stargate writers, including Mallozzi and Brad Wright, were consulting producers.
Amazon bought MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion with a new Stargate reboot in mind. It officially ordered the show in 2025. By May 2026, this team of veteran showrunners was 20-weeks into the writing process and had moved into pre-production.
What could have possibly caused such a cataclysmic meltdown in "creative direction" at that stage??
I don't know, but I have a feeling the meeting with the Amazon execs looked like that infamous South Park episode...

Many times, the destruction of our stories is as purposeful as the destruction of statues of Columbus and Washington.
Hollywood isn't wasting money. It's bulldozing the heroes and tales that unite us so it can replace them.
