I don't know about you, but I am still not tired of winning.
The Trump DOJ this week announced that they were intervening against the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, which is the only city in the U.S. to actually implement racial reparations for black folks.
We covered the story here before, but Evanston is using money from marijuana taxes (for real) to hand out $25,000 checks to residents on the basis of race.
But you can't legally give away money to people based on race.
From the DOJ:
Today, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division moved to intervene in a lawsuit challenging a program by the City of Evanston, Illinois, that distributes cash payments and financial assistance for housing solely to black persons, and their descendants, and not to similarly situated persons of other races. The United States' proposed complaint in intervention alleges that the city's actions violate the Equal Protection Cause [sic] of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Fair Housing Act.
'Under the pretext of paying reparations for events more than 100 years ago, the City of Evanston has chosen to distribute millions of dollars in cash and housing benefits to people because of the color of their skin or the color of the skin of their parents, grandparents, or great grandparents,' said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. 'There are sound ways for a city to remedy past discrimination or direct resources to its most vulnerable citizens and neighborhoods. Simply handing out money based on race, however, is not the answer. It is race discrimination, pure and simple. And it is illegal.'
Man, isn't it nice to have a civil rights division in the DOJ that actually does its job and prevents the most common discrimination in the country (racist discrimination against whites)?
Here's more from Just the News:
The $20 million program, which is funded by a local tax on legal marijuana sales, also applies to residents of any race who claim to have experienced discrimination due to city policies after 1969. The city has already dolled out $7 million to hundreds of people in $25,000 payments, the Associated Press reported.
The program allots different benefits based on the race of the recipient, which the Department of Justice argues is 'racially discriminatory' and violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Anyone can apply for the money, but the city is choosing how much you get based on your skin color.
