Behold, the benefits of green energy!
Yikes.
From ABC 7 in Los Angeles:
A dramatic fire involving solar panels erupted Wednesday afternoon on a commercial building in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, sending a massive black column of smoke into the air above the scene.
Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were initially in offensive mode and for a time seemed to have gotten the upper hand on the flames. The fire later flared up in a major way, however, sending the firefighters into defensive mode.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents of the surrounding areas. NBC 4 had additional details on the blaze:
The fire was reported at about 2:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Los Palos Street on the roof of the single-story, nearly 491,000-square-foot Lineage cold food storage facility, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
'There is a field of solar panels on the roof. That's really where the fire was. It was a surface fire on the solar panels,' LAFD Chief Jaime Moore told NBC Los Angeles.
So the solar panels that are supposed to save us all from destruction at the hands of environmental disasters are now bursting into flames and poisoning the environment?
More video of the massive cloud of black smoke:
Three water-dropping helicopters (typically used to fight wildfires) were eventually useful in controlling the rooftop blaze, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted hours later.
Still, the next time some guy gives you the sales pitch on installing solar panels on your roof…
…remember what they did in LA.
