One of the nation's most important, era-defining laws just went into effect in Tennessee recently.
Tennessee lawmakers made it easier to keep a raccoon as a pet.
They did that by getting rid of the $31 permit fee.
The provision went into effect on July 1.
According to WKRN, raccoon-ownership was brought to you by two Republican state legislators:
The Republican-backed proposed legislation, sponsored by Sen. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) and Rep. Kip Capley (R-Summertown), would lift the permit fee currently required to own a pet raccoon as long as the animal is obtained from a legal source; has been vaccinated; is non-native; was not captured from the wild; and a possession permit for the raccoon has been issued by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
In other words, Tennesseans still can't go pluck a trash panda from a random garbage can on the street and take him home, but it is possible to have one.
