From The Post Millennial's post-mortem:

The film marks the first Star Wars theatrical release in seven years. Heading into Memorial Day weekend, the movie earned roughly $33 million on Friday in North America and is projected to bring in between $80 million to $100 million over the holiday weekend.

The high end of those projections would place the film near the 2018 opening of 'Solo: A Star Wars Story,' which also opened on Memorial Day. The film was seen as a major financial disappointment for the studio.

Disney had hoped that the film, featuring one of its few popular Star Wars properties in recent years, would pave the way for its return to box office success. The numbers show that may not be the case.

Sure, the movie made some money over the holiday weekend:

In summary, Star Wars isn't the automatic cash cow it once was.

You know things are bad when even Rolling Stone is ragging on you:

Wasn't this supposed to be Lucasfilm's new hope for a big-screen revival? What happened? Its opening on a holiday weekend looks successful by 'normal' metrics — it's set to pass $100 million by the end of today — yet it's already being earmarked as a likely contender for the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie to date.

There's little here to suggest that this needed to make the hyper-speed jump from streamer to multiplex. It's strictly for the less discerning fans and the shareholders.

It takes a truly special talent to be able to kill the golden goose that was Star Wars, yet somehow, Disney and Kathleen Kennedy seem to have done it. After years of horrible writing, disrespecting the source material, trying to make Star Wars a girls' brand ("The Force is Female"), and insulting the fans, it seems the largest film franchise in history is now totally irrelevant.

Nothing pays better tribute to the 49th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars than dragging the franchise's corpse through the streets.

Pour one out in memory of Star Wars, folks.

Better yet, show your kids the original trilogy.
