As former Mayor Eric Adams said, New York City has a brand.

The absolute worst.
Donike Goca stepped out of her Mercedes-Benz SUV at 11:20 p.m. outside the Cartier store at 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue. We're talking right smack in the center of downtown NYC.
Look at how close the manhole was to her car. She parked right next to it:

Goca reportedly fell 10 feet through that open manhole. Bystanders called 911 and first responders rushed Goca to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, but she died from her injuries. A witness named Carlton Wood said, quote, "it was like in those cartoons."
Wood said he heard Goca scream "‘I'm dying, I'm dying" over and over after the fall.
The city's energy provider, Consolidated Edison, said it is "deeply saddened" and is "actively investigating how this occurred," which probably isn't a sufficient PR response for Goca's family.
Goca had two grandkids, a son, and a daughter.
A nearby construction worker had a lot of questions when interviewed by the NY Post.
'It should have never happened. They should have covered it back up or put something around it,' a construction worker nearby told The Post.
'Or if it wasn't left open, how did it get off? That's the question right there,' he said.
'Ten feet is not too deep. Since it's ConEd, she might have hit some live wires and got electrocuted, I don't know.'
Burn sheets used by first responders were visible at the scene.
A horrible, but very "New York City," way to die. 👇
