An Angry Beaver with Rabies!
That dog is lucky to be alive after just standing by the water barking away as the humans escaped. Beaver attacks can be fatal, especially when, as in this story, the beaver was confirmed to have rabies.
This happened on Sunday at Lake Henry in Mahwah, New Jersey.
Fox News has the deets:
Authorities said the boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York, for treatment.
Officials later confirmed the beaver tested positive for rabies.
The Mahwah Township Health Department said the animal had contact with multiple people over the weekend, and anyone who may have been exposed should seek immediate medical evaluation.
Hopefully by "multiple people" the health department meant that single group of people, because rabies is no joking matter. If you get the vaccine before symptoms arrive, you're good. If symptoms arrive before you get it, you're almost 100% dead of brain inflammation.
Welp, I guess I'll continue to fish bends and downed trees - and completely avoid anything that looks like it could be a beaver dam.
For the record, a beaver doesn't have to have rabies to act in this way. Those things are extremely territorial, especially when they've got pups.
