Parts of the Midwest had quite a day on Thursday, per local news:
Numerous tornadoes and powerful straight-line winds ripped across communities in northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana on Thursday, destroying homes and toppling trees and power lines amid a severe weather outbreak across the Midwest.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported radar-confirmed tornadoes striking towns across both states, including Streator, St. John, Hobart, Merrillville, Hebron, Boone/Kouts and the Wabash/Largo area.
At least one death has been reported.
Here was the aftermath of the tornadoes in Illinois and Indiana:
For being so destructive, the storms really did put on a magnificent show.
One of the twisters even put on a once-in-a-lifetime show for storm chasers:
Yep, that's a tornado basically looping around above itself:
According to Wikipedia, this phenomenon is uncommon but not unheard-of in strong tornadoes:
In rare instances, multi-vortex tornadoes may display their strength through the uncommon method of 'horizontal vortices', in which tornadoes appearing to "bend" their multiple interior vortices; this results in a tornado appearing to radiate thin lines.
It's the sign of a strong twister, in other words β and judging from the damage of the day, these twisters were indeed strong.
Prayers to all y'all affected by this.
