About 250 criminals in Chicago have had their ankle monitors malfunction, and now these criminals are all technically unaccounted for.

It works out to 8% of the people on electronic monitoring in the pre-trial program in Cook County in Chicago who are unaccounted for.

I'm up in Milwaukee, and I'm already locking doors and staying frosty on this one!

From WGN:

[Cook County Chief Judge Charles] Beach revealed in an exclusive interview with WGN Investigates that 8% of defendants on electronic monitoring are AWOL, their current location unknown.

'It doesn't mean they're out committing crimes necessarily,' Beach said. 'Some might be. But they're actively being searched for right now by law enforcement.'

Some might be...

You heard some of the horror stories above. I'll give you one.

There's Alphanso Talley, a seven-time convicted felon who was chilling on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial for carjacking. His monitor stopped transmitting and cops eventually picked him up on a robbery warrant in April. He gave them a fake name and told them he had swallowed drugs. At the hospital, he allegedly used a smuggled gun to shoot two Chicago police officers, killing one.

And now we've got 250 of these monitors out of service.

Good luck with that one, Chicago!
